Cary Press garners prestigious Leab Award
Claude Bragdon and the Beautiful Necessity has just won the prestigious Leab Award for 2011 in the Division One (expensive) category. Established by Katharine Kyes Leab and Daniel J. Leab, editors of the influential reference work American Book Prices Current, the Leab Award recognizes outstanding library exhibition catalogs and is managed by the Association of College and Research Libraries Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS). Leab Award certificates will be presented to the winners on June 26th during the RBMS membership meeting at the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
The book was designed by the award-winning typographer, Mark Argetsinger, and is liberally illustrated with examples of Bragdon’s sketches, color renderings, geometric studies, buildings, and other extraordinarily inventive work. One judge described the book as “transcendent” and “a definitive study of a relatively unknown figure in the history of 20th-century American architecture.”
